My pops used to play cards every Friday night with Matt “Chappie” Chaplain, so I’d known him around 15 years when he passed away from a cardiac arrest aged just 38 . My pops also survived a heart attack, so when I saw in the local press that Heartbeat United were looking to raise funds for the British Heart Foundation, I really wanted to get involved. We’re looking to break the Guinness World Record for the longest football match, with the money being split between the BHF, and creating a permanent footballing memorial to Chappie, and to Matt Grimstone and Jacob Schilt, who were both victims of the tragic air crash at Shoreham in August 2015.
You can read the full details around the fundraising below, and I’d really appreciate any donations which can be made at GoFundMe.
Matt Chaplain passed away in April 2013 from a cardiac arrest, aged just 38. Matt Grimstone and Jacob Schilt were victims of the tragic air crash at Shoreham in August 2015. Both were aged only 23. All three were county league footballers, and were linked to Worthing United FC.
We now look to unite as a football family and community, to break the record for the longest football match, with money raised split between the British Heart Foundation and creating a permanent footballing memorial to three players taken from us far too soon.
The game takes place from 26th to 30th May at Lancing College, and we aim to beat the current record which stands at 105hrs.
